The day began with a walking tour led by representatives from Bradford Council, Balfour Beatty and SWECO. The tour showcased the dramatic changes taking place in the city centre, highlighting how new infrastructure is helping to create a healthier, more vibrant and nature-positive urban environment. Attendees saw firsthand the introduction of segregated cycle lanes, extensive pedestrianisation, and the integration of green infrastructure and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS).
In the afternoon, Professor Rosie McEachan, Director of Born in Bradford, highlighted the vital importance of cross-sector collaboration in securing long-term improvements to population health.
Sally Jones, Environment and Sustainability Manager at Bradford Council, then presented early evidence of the city’s progress. She reported a 25% reduction in respiratory-related GP visits since the launch of Bradford’s Clean Air Zone - a striking indication of the public health benefits that can result from ambitious air-quality action.
Further insights came from James Greenwood, Active Travel Social Prescribing Manager, and Angela Hutton, Senior Public Health Specialist. They outlined the development and early outcomes of Bradford’s pioneering “active travel on prescription” programmes, which are improving health, boosting employability and reducing social isolation among some of the city’s most disadvantaged communities.
The event was organised by the CIHT Yorkshire & the Humber committee and generously sponsored by Systra.
