Transport Secretary Mark Harper has confirmed that £300 million will be allocated to protect crucial routes and improve services until 2025 that individuals rely on for work, education, medical appointments and shopping.
In addition to protecting essential routes, the government will provide up to £200 million to address cost of living pressures by extending the cap on single bus fares.
Outside of London, fares will remain capped at £2 until the end of October 2023, and then at £2.50 until November 30, 2024. At that point, the government will review the effectiveness of the fare cap and explore options for future bus fares.
Local authorities will be empowered to work with bus operators and communities to identify and protect key routes. The government will provide financial support and guidance to ensure that essential bus services can continue to operate effectively.
A spokesperson for the Bus Centre of Excellence said:
The Bus Centre of Excellence welcomes this important investment in this important sector. This further highlights how the UK Government is looking to support the bus industry and deliver the objectives in the ‘Bus Back Better’ strategy. With the extension of the £2 bus fare cap and the protection of essential bus services, the UK government is reinforcing its commitment to ensuring accessible and affordable public transportation.
