Birmingham’s transport bosses are considering the introduction of a cable car in the city similar to the Emirates Airline in east London. They are looking to improve connections between New Street station and the proposed High Speed 2 terminus close to Moor Street station.
West Midlands transport authority Centro will hear from engineers and architects associated with London’s cable car at a seminar in the New Year. “A cable car is an interesting option,” said a Centro spokesman. “Our goal is to ensure that New Street, Moor Street and the high speed terminal all serve as one.
“High speed rail passengers are going to want some sort of high quality connection between stations and it is right to explore every option,” he added.
The idea of a cable car is welcomed by the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce – but the suggestion initially came as a surprise. “When I first heard about it I thought it was April 1st,” admitted spokesman John Lamb, “but we can see this will be very useful for people with luggage and the roads around the city can be very busy. Anything that makes life easier for commuters is welcome.”
Mr Lamb recognises that a cable car could attract visitors to Birmingham but added he is a little concerned about the impact a decreased footfall across the city could have for shopkeepers.
