Despite progress in widening participation, women continue to be significantly underrepresented in engineering. Evidence shows that, among those who enter the profession, women leave engineering roles at around twice the rate of men. This research aims to explore the factors, experiences and issues behind this trend, helping the profession design more targeted initiatives to support retention and progression.
The study will focus on the lived experiences of women engineers who have left the profession, including (but not limited to) those with intersectional characteristics, which can bring additional challenges to career progression. Findings will support the Royal Academy of Engineering and the wider sector in strengthening diversity, inclusion and representation across engineering.
Sue Percy CBE, Chief Executive of the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT), said:
“Engineering needs experienced voices at every stage of the career pipeline, and we know too many talented women are leaving the profession mid career. Research such as this is vital in helping us understand the real experiences behind the statistics, and in shaping practical action that will improve retention, progression and long term inclusion across our sector.”
Taking part in the research
IES and CRAC are keen to speak to women who:
Participation involves a one hour career narrative interview with an experienced researcher, taking place during January or February 2026. As a thank you, participants will receive a £45 voucher. Women who have already taken part have described the experience as positive and have valued the opportunity to “have a voice” and tell their story.
IES would be grateful for support in sharing this opportunity with former or lapsed members who may be eligible to take part.
How to get involved
If you feel you fit the criteria, or you know someone who does, please contact the research team at IES:
