The Camden High Line project aims to convert redundant rail corridor between Camden Road station and York Way near King’s Cross over a distance of 1.1km. The plan is an echo of New York’s High Line walkway in Manhattan, which opened in 2009 on the site of a disused freight route.

Chief executive of the Camden High Line charity Simon Pitkeathley said: “This iconic park will enliven the capital. It is a symbol of hope for London's post Covid economic and social recovery and I cannot wait to walk it.”

London's Deputy Mayor for planning and regeneration Jules Pipe added: “The Camden High Line has the potential to be become an invaluable community asset. It will create new green space, connect neighbourhoods and attract visitors from across London and beyond.”

Much of the route of the High Line will be shared with Overground services and a separation wall will be needed between the path and live railway towards the eastern end of the line, where the width of the corridor narrows.

Three of the five finalists are based in the UK: Benedetti, Feilden Fowles and We Made That. They are up against French firm Agence Ter and American designer James Corner Field Operations. The winning team is set to be announced in January.
