London has set its sights on one million people in the capital being members of a car club within a decade.

 

Transport for London has joined forces with London Councils, the Greater London Authority and a coalition of car club operators to launch an action plan. The plan encourages residents and businesses to sign up to and consider car club schemes as an alternative to vehicle ownership.

 

London is already said to be one of the leading car club cities in Europe, and 85% of car club members in the UK are thought to be in the capital. The new action plan will promote car clubs further in an attempt to set an example for other major cities to follow.

 

Among the actions of the plan are to work with London boroughs to promote car clubs, create more car club parking bays and make better use of technology so that members can easily identify nearby bays.

 

Transport for London’s managing director of surface transport Leon Daniels said: “The use of car clubs in London has grown significantly in recent years and we continue to support the initiative across London as a way to help reduce congestion and encourage sustainable travel.

 

“This new action plan will help encourage more Londoners to consider the benefits of car clubs, including the money saved.”

 

London Councils’ transport and environment committee chair Julian Bell added: “Car clubs are an increasingly popular means of getting around London. They have the potential to ease the pressure on our roads and help tackle poor air quality, which poses a threat to peoples’ health across the city.”
