SCP were proud to hold an open doors event with WISE. A group of 12 girls from local schools came to the SCP Leeds office to learn about the careers and futures in Transport Planning, Infrastructure Design and Civil Engineering Construction. The two hour session focused on the variety of careers the consultancy and construction industry can offer.

They all came away with smiles on their faces and with a much broader idea of what educational choices they could make to give them options in to Engineering.
The event used a range of examples of the services SCP offer including 3D modelling of traffic, drainage and ground modelling for highways. They learnt about the stages of our industry from feasibility, planning, design and construction.

The event was also support by CECA Yorkshire and Humber who also showcased the construction stage of our industry. SCP Director and CIHT Fellow, Steven Carmody said ‘it was a great event and after initially worrying whether we would get many numbers in to make it a success, the final attendance showed what the appetite from girls is for learning more about what we do. ‘

It would be great if some of them remember this event and chose a career in our industry.

Some comments from the event:

Shagufta Sharif – Wise Development Manager
We are grateful to SCP for allowing us to show girls that transport planning and civil engineering could be for people like them. It was great to see the context of the fantastic work being done. Introducing girls to careers that they don’t ordinarily see, is key to allowing them to make a more informed choice when selecting their own career paths in the future. The mums and daughters thoroughly enjoyed the visit, with some of the mums even considering a career change!

The girls and their mums:
