CIHT welcomes today’s announcement of a new statutory body to plan infrastructure projects.

This demonstrates transport infrastructure is recognised by Government as vital to UK economic growth.

CIHT believes that a logical compliment to an infrastructure commission is the development of a National Transport Strategy.  

CIHT has consistently called for both of these to be recognised for economic and social reasons.

Announcements on improved funding of infrastructure from local authority pension funds, business rates and asset sales are also welcomed. Certainty and continuity of funding is vital to the effective development of infrastructure.

There is an opportunity in this to give longer term funding and certainty to local transport networks.

CIHT have long made the case to Government that the whole transport network is vital to the social and economic wellbeing of the UK and this will be helped if the infrastructure commission supports the development of a National Transport Strategy.
