What is Allyship?

Tom describes allyship as ‘ensuring people are given an equal and fair chance’ and using privilege to remove barriers and create opportunities. He emphasises that allyship is not a one-off action but an ongoing commitment:

‘It’s about calling out inappropriate behaviour, listening, educating yourself, and embracing discomfort to make positive change.’

Why It Matters for Transport

The discussion highlights the recruitment challenge in the bus industry, where only around 10% of the workforce is female despite women making up nearly half of the working population. Tom explains that increasing diversity is not just about fairness—it improves decision-making and helps create a safer, more welcoming network for all.

Practical Steps and Cultural Change

From women-only recruitment days to mentoring schemes, operators are taking steps to attract and retain a more diverse workforce. However, Tom stresses that cultural change is key:

‘The macho culture in parts of the industry remains a barrier. Allyship at every level can help break that down.’

Continuous Effort

The theme of the episode—‘Eternal Vigilance of an Ally’—reflects the need for sustained action. ‘Allyship should be part of what everyone does,’ says Tom.

‘It’s about building the best teams and making better decisions.’
“Don’t be afraid to have the conversation. We all make mistakes, but learning and trying again is what makes us better allies.”
