CIHT welcomes Government recognition of the importance of the highway network with new structures for delivery and changes to funding for strategic roads now in place.

This year’s conference builds on CIHT work with its members over the past year to address the themes of change, innovation and the future.

CIHT panel events in 2017 included a ‘Streets of the Future’ event in July. In September, the Institution addressed the question: ‘Can we improve the integration of planning and transport for a better future?’ Understanding the contribution of transport was the focus of an event in December.

The CIHT day long conference is designed around knowledge sharing interactive sessions, industry leading speakers, leading exhibitors and opportunities for professional networking.

Leading speakers and panel members set to address the conference include:

  • Roy Brannen, chief executive, Transport Scotland, who is the subject of the conference’s main interview and will offer a global perspective of the sector
  • Elliot Shaw, executive director of strategy and planning, Highways England, who will explain its approach to the next investment period on the strategic road network
  • Dave Wright, executive director for highways at Kier will share his experience from the company’s perspective as a leading Gold Corporate Partner
  • Dana Skelley OBE, director of strategy and operational excellence at Skanska Civil Engineering will draw on her experience looking at future challenges for the industry
  • Gergely Raccuja, strategic consultant at Amey and winner of the 2017 Wolfson Economics Prize for his entry: ‘Paying for road use could be Miles Better’ which addresses future funding, new services and legal issues.

Four interactive knowledge sharing breakout sessions are:

  • Collaboration across public and private sector partners across the industry
  • Developing new skills and talent across the industry
  • Changes to the network: Peter Molyneux, strategic roads director, Transport for the North
  • Innovation changing the way we work: Chris Dyer, head of consultancy for infrastructure asset management at Yotta and Mike Hansford, asset and performance manager at Dorset County Council
