Sue Percy CBE, Chief Executive and Liberty Hibberd, Public Affairs Manager at CIHT attended this year’s Labour Party Conference from 22 – 25 September in Liverpool.
Sue and Liberty attended several transportation-related fringe events and engaged with stakeholders to explore opportunities for enhancing cross-industry collaboration with CIHT.
It has been 14 years since the Labour Party as held a conference while in government in Westminster.
However, the mood of the conference was not as jubilant as expected, with the Prime Minister and the Chancellor reiterating in their conference speeches that the impending Spending Review on October 30 will “mean tough decisions”.
Some highlights of CIHT’s conference activity included:
Meeting Paul Swinney, Director of Policy and Research at the Centre for Cities, to discuss alignment between our organisations and how to collaborate in the future.
Engagement with David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, to discuss the new Mayor’s ambitions and transport priorities in York and North Yorkshire. CIHT offered to work with the Mayor in the future providing expert recommendations, best practise and discussing how we can support improving the transport networks in York and North Yorkshire.
Meeting with Andrew Harries Governmental Affairs Manager at the Society of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (SMMT) to discuss collaboration within the motor vehicle and transport infrastructure sectors.
Meeting with Simon Lightwood MP, Minister for Local Transport to discuss the Bus Centre of Excellence (BCoE) and their upcoming Quality Bus Conference. CIHT will be following up with the Minister to support the government's upcoming agenda on local transport policy.
Sue and Liberty also met with several other stakeholders to showcase CIHT activity and outline our views on key policy and strategic issues.
Why were we there?
CIHT’s Council and Board of Trustees have asked for us to increase the Institution’s visibility and activity with governments and key stakeholders. Attending the Labour Party Conference was part of this initiative and was an initial step on CIHT potentially attending other party conferences in the future.
CIHT looks forward to continuing discussions and addressing key takeaways from the fringe events in the upcoming weeks.
