CIHT Fellow Claudia Currie yesterday (11/06/2020) represented CIHT at The Welsh Affairs Committee's inquiry into the economic consequences for Wales of COVID-19, and the support that will be required to support the Welsh economy both during the pandemic and the rebuilding period that will follow. Today's session focussed on the role of transport.
Claudia emphasised the opportunity that currently exists to transform how people in Wales travel to more sustainable travel modes and also the opportunity to use this lockdown period to fast-track certain work making sure that transport infrastructure, including roads, footways, cycleways and more, are in good condition as lockdown eases, but fast-tracking cannot stand in the way of good practice and making sure that we get things right first time.
To support this opportunity CIHT's Improving Local Highways and Better Planning, Better Transport, Better Places documents sets out some of the key changes that needs to happen to ensure a move to sustainable and healthy transport. Further, support from CIHT members of the Welsh Placemaking Charter and the Planning Policy Wales will also help cease the current opportunity to make a significant switch to more sustainable travel modes.
