CIHT Bus Planning Guidelines
Guidance on the planning of urban bus services is being prepared by Tim Pharoah (MCIHT) on behalf of the Institution, supported by a steering group and a reference group of people involved in bus provision.
The guideline will describe good practice in the design and operation of bus services in relation to new and existing development. The document will focus on the types of services and infrastructure that should be aimed at to achieve the objective of high proportions of travel by walking, cycling and public transport. The subject and issues covered will include:
1. The role of buses in the transport mix
2. The key principles of route and network design
3. The configuration of new development in relation to public transport
4. Service coverage (spatial and temporal)
5. Bus stop design
6. Street design for bus operation
7. Interchange
8. Vehicles
9. Information
10. Fares and tariffs
The organisation, funding and management structures of bus operation are complex and currently undergoing much change. This will be the subject of a separate document from CIHT.
CIHT would like to hear from any member who knows of a particular example of good practice in any aspect of bus service provision. The intention is to include a selection of case examples in the new Bus Planning Guideline, due to be published as a web document later in the year. Please contact technical@ciht.org.uk with your examples or for further information.
