IWD is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

For IWD 2023, the global campaign theme is #EmbraceEquity. The campaign aims to encourage important conversations on Why equal opportunities aren't enough and why equal isn't always fair. People start from different places, so true inclusion and belonging require equitable action.
Here at the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation's (CIHT) we have been at the forefront of advocating for greater Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) for women across the highways and transportation sector. Recent examples have been our EDI Strategy that was released in 2022. The 5-year long 'shifting the dial' strategy hopes to #EmbraceEquity and outlines an ambitious strategy that will use CIHT position as a strategic influencer and leader in the transport sector to effect change.
The signatories to CIHT's Diversity and Inclusion Charter also believe that a commitment to diversity and inclusion is essential to reflect the communities we serve.
To celebrate equality, diversity and inclusion within the sector we have also brought back our EDI Award for the 2023 CIHT Awards. This award recognises employers or individuals that have implemented (or been involved in) an EDI initiative of merit. The overall judging will consider how the EDI initiative has been implemented, what steps have been done in its creation and the measures used to monitor progress.
Traditionally women have been underrepresented in the sector. However, at this time CIHT is uniquely positioned in the sector, with both a female CEO and president. Alongside 4 women on the board of trustees and 3 regional chairs.

CIHT is proud to celebrate International Women’s Day 2023 and the remarkable women who work in the highways and transportation sector. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion is a key theme in our Corporate Strategy 2022+ and we support this year’s focus on #EmbraceEquity.
Our profession continues to make progress in becoming more inclusive and we know we need to continue to build on the great work the sector is doing. CIHT will soon be releasing our updated Equality, Diversity and Inclusion toolkit and the sector has an opportunity to show real leadership and remove barriers to ensure we make #Highways and #Transportation a great career for all.
Since its birth in the early 1900s, International Women’s Day has grown from strength to strength annually and this year is no different as CIHT continues to encourage more women to consider careers in highways and transportation.

Do you work or live in and around the West Midlands? Join CIHT West Midlands for their ‘International Women’s Day – Role models in Highways and Transportation’ event on Thursday 9th March at Arcadis office in Birmingham. In recognition of IWD (International Women's Day), you will hear from four female highways and transportation professionals. The speakers will discuss the 2023 theme, share their experience as female professionals in the industry, challenges they have encountered and how they have dealt with them.
