It has been six months since we launched the CIHT CLIMATES report. This report was the culmination of the CLIMATES initiative that ran throughout 2024-5 and the report contained seven recommendations CIHT wanted to see taken forward.
We wanted to update you on what we (and our supporters) have been working on and to highlight opportunities for you and your organisation to join in on making a difference.
More information on the CLIMATE initiative is available here.
Mitesh Solanki, President, CIHT:
Since the launch of the CIHT CLIMATES report, we have been working hard to promote and respond to the recommendations. We have seen immediate implementation in areas of activity including CIHT Learn (more info below) and are working towards some more medium term solutions for the complex challenges we outlined in this report. We at CIHT have embedded many of the recommendations into our regular communication activity, this includes them being at the centre of our consultation responses, through speaking at events and raising them through stakeholder engagement.
We cannot do this on our own and we will continue to call for sector support as we further develop activity to support these recommendations.
Here we look at one of the recommendations in more detail and highlight some of the activity around it.
CIHT should play a central role in building the transportation profession’s capacity and capability to deliver climate action. It should double down on the enabling function it provides through continuing professional development (CPD) to improve the competency of highways and transportation professionals with the knowledge, skills, mindset, and leadership required to support governments, industry, academia, and the public on climate action.
This key recommendation is one where CIHT believes we should be taking a lead and is already enhancing our continuing professional development offer through new courses and modules on CIHT Learn. We have also reviewed and are updating our Transportation Decarbonisation Pathway, this framework provides CIHT members with a structured framework to fulfilling climate action related CPD goals. To further support this recommendation, we will be reiterating that CIHT members are expected to focus some of their annual CPD effort on developing the skills and knowledge they need to play their role in the decarbonisation of highways and transportation.
The next steps for us in this journey will see us continue in our role of leading on this recommendation. Planned initiatives include the creating of a web-based climate hub to provide a central repository for all related activity, a review of where members want more support to meet their decarbonisation and adaptation knowledge needs and further development of related modules and courses for CIHT Learn.
We are aware that not everyone is up to speed on the CLIMATES recommendations, but we have been embedding them across our activity and it is now a core thread amongst lots of our activity.
We have identified a series of clear areas below where we have linked these back to our recommendations in the report.
