The conference is the latest in a programme of activities organised in collaboration with Child Friendly Leeds, aimed at bringing children’s wishes around transport to a wider audience.
Attendees listened to presentations from Child Friendly Leeds about the work they are doing local to represent the needs of children, as well as Active Travel England on the importance of child-friendly streets and active school runs; and from our sponsors PJA about best practice in child friendly street design.
In the afternoon, attendees took part in a “design hack” session, facilitated by local STEM Ambassadors who have spent the past few months gathering ideas from school children about what they want to see on their local school street. Split into groups covering one school each, participants worked together to develop a “design concept” of workable solutions that will be taken back to school children in the autumn term for consultation.
The conference was a unique opportunity to help progress children’s ideas towards deliverable schemes and its hoped these design concepts will give school children an insight into highways and transportation careers as well as how their wishes can help shape the built environment.
CIHT Yorkshire and the Humber are grateful for the sponsorship of PJA and the support of our STEM Ambassadors, Child Friendly Leeds and Leeds City Council for making the event possible.
