The aim of the conference was to emphasise the urgency of achieving net zero and provide insight into regional solutions for developing a more sustainable and low carbon future. In what was a day of thought-provoking learning, we were joined by experts within highways and transportation who presented a range of initiatives for addressing the climate emergency.
The conference was divided into four sessions, with three themed around the ‘Race to Net Zero’, and one session dedicated to the East of England Awards 2023. The awards sessions gave the opportunity to celebrate the very best the region offers across the key areas of highways and transportation, with the announcement of this year’s award winners. Congratulations to all of our award winners.
Hosted by CIHT East of England Chair, Ross-Percy Jones, the day began with Session 1: ‘The Net Zero Challenge’. In the morning session we heard from Hannah Staunton, Head of Communications at East West Rail, who delivered the keynote conference speech, and Karen McShane, CIHT President, who gave the Presidential address. This was followed by Session2: ‘CIHT East of England Awards 2023’.
After lunch, Session 3 focused on ‘Net Zero- Transport, Mobility and Regional Plans’. Within this session we heard from international speaker Jose Almendros on active travel in Spain, Mehmet Ahmet discussed demand management and Andrew Summers provided insight into the work of Transport East.
The final session of the day was centred around ‘Embedding carbon in scheme development’ and kicked off with Christopher Erhard from Milestone Infrastructure. Jo Baker from GCP updated conference on Cambourne to Cambridge, and the last presentation of the day was a joint presentation from Arup and Milestone on the Levelling Up Agenda.
The structure of the day allowed for opportunity to network with other professionals within the sector, and for delegates to visit the sponsors and exhibitors, who’s excellent stands showcased the work being undertaken in the region. Sponsors included Marlborough, Milestone Infrastructure and WSP, alongside exhibitors Blue Phoenix UK, Kiely Bros, Stabilised Pavements, Asphalt Group, and Multevo.
CIHT would like to thank all of our speakers, delegates, sponsors and exhibitors for their contribution to a fantastic conference.
