Yesterday, The Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) and TRL held a joint learned society event on the topic of automated vehicles. This event looked at an overview of the GATEway project, public perception to autonomous vehicles and the implications of driverless cars in smart cities.
The GATEway project, led by TRL, is aimed at understanding and overcoming the technical, legal and societal challenges of implementing automated vehicles in urban environments.
Sue Percy, Chief Executive, CIHT said:
“The CIHT Learned Society 2017 event helps capture the things that either help to, or demonstrate the potential to, shape our world.
“CIHT is delighted to be able to work with TRL on this unique event that which focused on lessons being learnt from the GATEway project. Autonomous Vehicles are seen by many as providing a solution to a number of the transport challenges we face now and in the future.
“At this event, we explored the issues at the forefront of the AV agenda: from how they are guided in complex urban environments, to public perceptions and how they link into the smart cities agenda.”
Delegates also heard from Professor Nick Reed Academy Director at TRL, Lola Fernadez-Redondo Head of Planning at DG Cities, Graeme Smith Chief Executive Officer at Oxbotica and Rama Gheerawo Director at the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Design.
The speakers’ presentations were filmed, and will be available on the CIHT website in due course.
