Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department for Transport and Home Office used the Shared Spaces Debate at the House of Lords to highlight an important project that CIHT is developing.

CIHT is working with DfT to produce a new guidance that sets the context of creating better places by managing highway space better.

Shared Streets: redefining shared space aims to use the practical experience gained from more recent schemes to build on the existing advice. It will identify good and bad practice and try to move away from the idea that shared space is somehow synonymous with a lack of definition between road and footway.

More details on the debate can be found here and here.

The new guidance will be aimed at professionals designing public realm improvements that incorporate shared space between different user groups. Contributors will include members of the CIHT Urban Design Panel with the cooperation of the Department for Transport

This guidance is scheduled to be launched in Spring 2016. To find out more, please contact e: technical@ciht.org.uk
