The course comprises 10 interactive modules, delivered in bite-sized chunks (10-15 minutes each), totalling around 14.5 hours of CPD learning.
Modules cover topics such as Quality Champions, Commercial Awareness, Safety Systems, Risk Awareness, Occupational Hygiene & Health Protection, The Four Stages of Team Development, Creating an Enviable Team Culture, Managing Team Performance, Enhancing Your Mentoring Skills and Behavioural Awareness.
No formal academic entry requirements — the course is open to all learners who wish to develop supervisory and leadership skills.
Why it matters for the sector
With increasing demands on infrastructure, construction and transportation projects to meet safety, performance and cultural benchmarks, CIHT’s SSL2 offering addresses a clear market gap: frontline supervisors often require more than operational know-how — they need leadership, team-development and behaviour-based skills.
By aligning the training with National Highways’ competency framework and the Highways Passport scheme, the course positions participants to meet recognised industry standards, thereby enhancing employability and operational effectiveness.
What’s next for employers and participants
Individuals looking to advance their careers can enrol directly through the CIHT Learn platform. Employers seeking to up-skill multiple staff are encouraged to contact admin@cihtlearn.org.uk for group enrolment and discuss tailored options or funding.
Bottom line
The launch of the Supervisor Skills Level 2 programme marks a significant step in the professional development journey for those working in highways and transport supervision. By moving beyond the basics into leadership territory, CIHT is offering a route for supervisors to become more effective leaders — and for employers to cultivate stronger teams and safer, higher-performing worksites.
