Have you been involved in delivery and planning of active travel and road space reallocation schemes? Then CIHT would like to hear from you.

CIHT are currently looking at the implementation of active travel schemes and in general making changes to the local highway network, particularly in those areas where space is limited and where there is competing demands for that space. We are primarily exploring the process of implementing schemes, including engagement, and how the case for making changes to highways, in terms of being able to demonstrate outcomes and benefits to society, can be improved. In the past year we have seen how some of these changes can cause much debate and proof to be very divisive, and in some cases schemes have been withdrawn.  It should however be noted that many such schemes have also been very successful and well received by local communities.

There is a push from government to build more and better active travel infrastructure in the UK as is clear from its Gear Change white paper and the creation of the new active travel inspectorate, Active Travel England. A recent CIHT webinar on Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, also highlighted how highways professionals are facing unprecedented challenges implementing changes to the highway at the pace expected of them to encourage and prioritise active travel.

CIHT are looking to create a hub-page with information and evidence that will support practitioners in making the case for active travel schemes. The report will also look at whether there are gaps that need further exploration to equip the sector with the necessary tools and skills to succeed.

CIHT are looking to gather case studies from across the UK that show evidence of the impacts and lessons learnt of active travel and road space reallocation schemes.
