The UK Government has set out an ambitious house-building agenda, with a target of 1.5 million new homes in England alone. This is an opportunity to create high quality places which create long-term value for people and the environment. To explore how this vision can be achieved, the Landscape Institute (LI) is hosting a range of regional conferences across the UK in 2025 and 2026.

The first, in Birmingham, will take place on Thursday 2 October 2025 (Millennium Point, Curzon St, Birmingham B4 7AP).

Across 6 sessions, the conference will explore a range of issues that are vital to delivering quality places:

  • Planning policy in England

  • A holistic approach to creating healthy places that improve the quality of life

  • Biodiversity Net Gain: Planning & development

  • Creating resilient outdoor spaces

  • Transport and active travel in new housing developments

  • Management and maintenance

CIHT is excited to share that CIHT Technical Champion, David Knight MCIHT, will participate in session 6: ‘Transport and active travel in new housing developments: How do we capitalise on the economic and social opportunities?’

CIHT welcomes the opportunity to share knowledge in this area and is pleased to support the Landscape Institute with its expertise. As outlined in our 2024 manifesto, an effective transport network is key to supporting all aspects of peoples’ lives.

Recent work by CIHT on transport and planning includes our response to DEFRA’s land use consultation. In June 2025, the National Audit Office (NAO) published a new report, Improving local areas through developer funding, highlighting issues with the current funding system and making recommendations for improvements. The report identifies several issues with the developer funding system that have been previously raised by CIHT. CIHT also recently held an in-person workshop exploring whether government planning reforms will help to change travel behaviour. A media release based on this discussion is expected to be published in August.
