The Regional Operating Centre (ROC) allows National Highways to operate the Strategic Road Network (SRN), clearing incidents and keeping traffic moving. From the ROC, National Highways can set variable signs and signals, deploy resources, answer SOS phones, liaise with emergency services and coordinate secondary responses including maintenance and vehicle recovery. The Yorkshire and North East ROC covers from the borders of Scotland to Derbyshire and from the east coast to the pennines. It is one of the geographically largest areas covered by National Highways and one of the most diverse in terms of road types.
CIHT members gathered for networking and refreshments and were given an introductory presentation from Dave Skupski, ROC Operations Manager, about the role of the ROC and the types of incidents that frequently occur on the SRN.
This was followed by a tour of the facility including an explanation of the work that was going on at the time and the roles that people hold such as Incident Co-ordinator, Dispatch and Traffic Manager. Each having their own responsibilities and expertise. The ROC operates 24/7, 365 days of the year.
National Highways were delighted host CIHT members and look forward to facilitating future visits.
