Last month I had the privilege of hosting the CIHT Northern Ireland Technical Study Tour to the Netherlands. We delivered a packed four-day programme across Utrecht, Rotterdam and Amsterdam, exploring first-hand how the Dutch continue to lead the way in sustainable transport, active travel and climate-resilient infrastructure.

The itinerary showcased some true world-leading infrastructure and innovation, including:

  • The Keringhuis and Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier – a remarkable feat of engineering and the largest moveable structure in the world, protecting Rotterdam from flooding.
  • Stationsplein, Utrecht – the world’s largest bicycle parking facility, accommodating over 12,600 bikes and seamlessly integrated into the public transport hub.
  • Experiencing Utrecht itself, widely regarded as one of the most cycle-friendly cities globally, with a mature and fully integrated active travel network.

We also had the opportunity to visit and learn from a number of iconic structures and projects, including: De Hef Vertical Lift Bridge, and Erasmus Cable-Stayed Bridge, a defining feature of Rotterdam’s skyline.

A key strength of the tour was the quality of technical input and local expertise. We benefited from outstanding presentations and guided visits from: Dutch Cycling Embassy, Shelley Bontje, Erik Tetteroo HODworks, Rijkswaterstaat, Rick Lindeman, Yari Msika and Delft University of Technology.

These sessions provided invaluable insight into:

  • Designing for people-first mobility.
  • Embedding cycling and active travel into everyday infrastructure planning
  • Delivering long-term, climate-resilient infrastructure solutions.
  • The importance of policy, governance and sustained investment in achieving real modal shift.

Beyond the technical learning, the visit also provided a fantastic opportunity to strengthen professional relationships, share experiences and reflect on how we can apply these lessons within a Northern Ireland context. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to making the visit such a success from our hosts and speakers to the CIHT NI delegation.

And a special thanks to our event sponsors:
