The Chancellor of the Exchequer today released the latest Autumn Statement.

A copy of the statement is available here.

Announcements by the Chancellor of the Exchequer of note to CIHT included:

  • An extra 30,000 places at English universities will be created in 2014-15. The following year, the current cap on student numbers will be abolished entirely.
  • Science, technology and engineering courses will receive increased funding
  • An additional 20,000 apprenticeships are to be funded over the next two years.
Sue Percy, CIHT Chief Executive said:

“We welcome the continued emphasis on infrastructure being at the centre of the economic agenda. Today’s announcement of the extra funding for science, technology and engineering courses and the funding of apprentices is a positive step.”

“In order to address the ongoing skills shortage our industry is facing whilst delivering the future infrastructure the UK needs, these additional 20,000 apprenticeships must be created in the right areas.”

“CIHT will be working with government, other professional bodies and associated stakeholders to highlight the areas where these apprenticeships are needed.”

A full analysis of the implications for the sector will be released in due course but in early reading most of the relevant announcements for highways & transportation were announced in yesterday’s National Infrastructure Plan and you can read CIHT's commentary and analysis on that here
