The transport planning technician apprenticeship podcast brings together an award-winning learning provider, Leeds College of Building (LCoB), an employer of transport planning apprentices, Leicestershire County Council, and a successful transport planning apprentice who achieved a distinction in her End Point Assessment (EPA) with the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT).

As the 200th transport planning apprentice prepares to complete their EPA with CIHT in March 2026, the podcast explores how CIHT and other stakeholders continue to support the development of the next generation of transport planning professionals.

Celebrating a decade of collaboration and achievement

Since the TPTAs introduction in 2016, CIHT has worked closely with training providers, employers and professional qualification experts to ensure the apprenticeship remains supportive of industry needs, aligned with professional standards and leads to the Engineering Technician (EngTech) professional qualification.

Reaching the milestone of 200 apprentices sitting their EPA with CIHT highlights, both the scale and success of our engagement with this apprenticeship and its growing recognition as a highly credible pathway into the highways and transportation sector.

Insights from across the transport planning apprenticeship journey

In this celebratory podcast, we are joined by Sarah Carter, Project Manager, Transport Planning and University Centre Designated Safeguarding Officer, at Leeds College of Building. Sarah reflects on her role in delivering the apprenticeship as the primary learning provider and supporting apprentices throughout their learning journey.

Sarah said:

LCB are thrilled, as the primary provider of the transport planning technician level 3 apprenticeship, that we have now supported 200 new early career professionals into the industry, many of whom have become professionally registered through CIHT. This is a great boost to so many local and national transport planning improvements and developments, as well as starting the careers of 200 people in an innovative, fascinating career

Richard Garratt is a Senior Transport Analyst & Head of the Transport Planning Apprenticeship Scheme at Leicestershire County Council. Ruchard highlights the value that apprentices bring to his business, including their significant contributions to real-world projects.

Shakira Bickhan, a former distinction level transport planning apprentice shares her personal journey of what inspired her to choose the apprenticeship route, demonstrates the support she received from CIHT, and highlights the apprenticeship’s role in building her confidence, competence and career opportunities.

The podcast also highlights CIHT’s ongoing role as an End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO), and showcases how engagement with CIHT supports apprentices during their training and beyond, including professional registration.
