Reports

In August we published the advice Better Planning, Better Transport, Better Places, a joint piece of work with the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) and the Transport Planning Society (TPS). This report provides advice on delivering sustainable developments and integrating transport and planning, two disciplines that have historically worked in silos, meaning that we’ve build unsustainable and car-dependent developments. Implementing the advice and suggestions from this report is vital if we are to overcome the climate emergency. Since the publication of the advice CIHT has, together with its regions, RTPI and TPS, organised and held six regional events and more are being organised in the new year to continue the dissemination.

In 2018 the then CIHT President Matthew Lugg gave evidence to the Transport Select Committee’s inquiry into local road maintenance. CIHT has since continued this work and will soon publish our findings which are based on extensive engagement with the sector, through public surveys and workshops. In October the government responded to the Transport Select Committee’s report and CIHT’s work was acknowledged. We look forward to publishing our report which we hope will contribute positively to delivering an inclusive and sustainable local road network fit for the future.

We have carried out a survey on the digitalisation of the Highways and Transportation Sector where we sought to get an impression of the sector's attitudes towards digitalisation. The responses were insightful and nuanced, and made it clear that change is coming and that many potential benefits related to the uptake of digital technologies, but also barriers to overcome; the skills challenge facing the sector and a lack of resources on the client side were some of the issues identified. The results from this survey will be published in a report in early 2020.

Consultations

CIHT has responded to a number of consultations this year. We have engaged with our members to inform our responses and provided professional and technical advice to government and other organisations who have put forward consultations. In these consultations we have made the case for transport’s contribution to a healthy society, the need to improve our efforts in road safety and a proper legal framework for connected and autonomous vehicles.

In Scotland, the CIHT Scottish Policy Forum, has worked closely with Transport Scotland on their new National Transport Strategy 2. CIHT are positive about the draft strategy that Transport Scotland consulted on in October. It is a case of national government recognising the benefits that transport can deliver in terms of health, environment, economy and equality. CIHT look forward to continuing to work with Transport Scotland and seeing how their vision for transport will be realised.

We are currently working on our response to The Law Commission's Consultation on Automated Vehicles which we would like your views on. Click here for more information.

Articles, podcasts and blogs

We have produced and published seven podcasts this year, three of which were on accessibility and building transport systems for people with disabilities. We spoke with Ann Frye, international specialist on the mobility needs of people with disabilities, and Charlotte V. McClain-Nhlapo, Global Disability Advisor at the World Bank Group. We have published blogs on electric vehicle charging, climate change and air quality.

Events

We have held nine events, which have received positive feedback and have been fully attended. We have had six technical events at Britannia Walk in London where we’ve covered a wide range of topics, including two workshops with Sub-National Transport Bodies, Transport for the South East and England’s Economic Heartland, giving our members the opportunity to meet the senior decision makers and help shape their future transport strategies.

We have held technical events on a wide range of topics; we’ve heard about resilience, wellbeing, collaboration and smart cities. We’ve shared knowledge with and learned from various industries such as aviation, rail, road, behavioural insights, the tech industry and the list goes on.

We supported the CIHT presence at the World Road Congress in Abu Dhabi 6 -10 October including presentations during the Congress.

In 2019 we have filmed all of our events meaning that all event presentations are now available on CIHT's YouTube channel
The then Minister of State for Transport, Rt. Jesse Norman, visited our Annual Conference where he was interviewed and the audience had a chance to ask questions. In June we celebrated the Highways and Transportation sector at our annual Awards Dinner.

The 2020 CIHT Awards are now open for entries. Click here for more information.
