Major reforms to data protection law that increase legal obligations for organisations which process personal data come into force this week, and CIHT has issued an update on its response.
All organisations are required to comply with the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) as of 25 May.
CIHT is planning to launch a new website – including an integrated membership database – this summer, and one of the new features will enable registered users to select preferences for communication activity.
For example members will be able to opt in and out of contact by telephone, post and receiving marketing and news emails.
Until the new website is launched, CIHT members will continue to be able to amend their contact details and opt in or out of communications via the MyCIHT section of the website ciht.org.uk/myciht
The Institution has also created a section on the current website where members can find out more about GDPR, which gives individuals more rights with respect to their personal data.
To help prepare for GDPR, the Institution has been working with data protection consultancy Blackmores which is supporting staff in identifying areas of risk and taking appropriate actions to mitigate these.
CIHT will embed good data protection practice and controls in line with a GDPR project plan proposed by Blackmores, with progress being overseen by the Audit Committee. A 30 minute awareness raising webinar on GDPR prepared by the consultant is also included in the members’ area of the CIHT website.
