The brief explains that pollutants such as oil, fuel residues, heavy metals, microplastics and road salts can be washed from road surfaces into watercourses during rainfall events. It calls for road runoff management to be integrated into routine maintenance programmes and improvement schemes, alongside the greater use of sustainable drainage systems and nature-based solutions. 

Drawing on case studies from Bristol, London and Alicante, the publication demonstrates how coordinated approaches can help improve water quality, reduce flood risk, enhance public spaces and deliver wider environmental and community benefits.
