The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP has delivered the Spring Forecast 2026, today (3rd March) in the House of Commons.

The Chancellor focused on cutting the cost of living, cutting borrowing, growing the economy, citing strengthening trade relationships, affordable housing, better transport and free childcare as integral parts of the government's strategy.

The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) calls on HM Treasury to ensure adaptation and resilience be made an immediate investment and policy priority.

Without decisive action now, the UK faces the risk of significant and costly infrastructure failures due to the increasing frequency on extreme weather events.

CIHT is calling for sustained funding for the maintenance of existing highways and transport assets, recognising that proactive maintenance and incremental adaptation are essential to strengthening resilience and achieving decarbonisation goals.

As outlined in the CIHT manifesto, prioritising investment in the highways, transportation and infrastructure sector enables significant wider economic, societal and health benefits.

CIHT looks forward to continuing to work with HM Treasury, the Department for Transport, and the wider UK Government on the creation of transport networks that are fit for all our futures.

Further information-

The Spring Forecast is an opportunity for the Chancellor to respond to the Office of Budget Responsibility’s (OBR)’s most recent economic forecast, following their commitment to deliver one major fiscal event per year at the Autumn Budget.

This new approach aims to provide increased stability and certainty, following on from market destabilisation following previous UK Governmental fiscal events.

The UK Government hopes that by providing stability in the public finances, investment in infrastructure and reform to the economy, the UK Government’s will build a stronger and more secure economy.
