The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) are supporting National Women in Engineering Day, a campaign which aims to raise the profile and celebrate the achievements of women in engineering, and encourage more girls to consider engineering as a career.
Sue Percy, Chief Executive of the Chartered Institution of Highway & Transportation, said: “Events such as National Women in Engineering Day help to raise the profile of women working in professions such as highways and transportation.
“By celebrating the achievements of women in engineering we hope it will inspire girls to find out more about the excellent and varied career opportunities available in the industry. It is also important that this information is made available in schools at an earlier age when career decisions are being shaped.”
CIHT Immediate Past President Sheila Holden pointed out that the UK has the lowest proportion of women professional engineers of any EU country. “If we are to deliver a first class transport system fit for the 21st Century we have to attract and retain the best talent in the country,” she said.
“There is a wealth of evidence to suggest that greater diversity improves productivity and delivers a better bottom line for businesses.”
