CIHT Fellow and Trustee, Steve Carmody, was presented with the prestigious Certificate of Merit at last week’s CIHT Yorkshire & the Humber Awards Dinner. The award, presented by CIHT Yorkshire & the Humber Chair, Ed Downer and CIHT President, Mitesh Solanki, came as a surprise to Steve and recognises his outstanding service to the Institution over the past decade.

Over the last 10 years, Steve has demonstrated unwavering commitment to CIHT at both regional and national levels. His contributions span multiple roles, including serving as Yorkshire & the Humber Chair in 2014-2015, participating in a range of panels and Boards, and providing valuable leadership through CIHT Council and the Board of Trustees. His impact has been both long-standing and influential, and he continues to play a vital role in shaping the Institution’s work.
A strong champion of CIHT’s core values - particularly Inclusivity and Professionalism - Steve has worked tirelessly to promote careers in the transport and engineering sectors among young people. Through panel sessions and career events, including those delivered in partnership with organisations such as Women in Science & Engineering (WISE), he has helped encourage greater diversity and representation across the industry.
Steve has also been instrumental in driving higher professional standards within his own team, where more than 60% have now achieved professional qualifications, with several going on to take active roles within CIHT themselves.
His commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) extends across the wider sector. Steve has delivered CPD training on unconscious bias at both corporate and regional levels and has supported initiatives that have contributed to a reduction in his organisation’s median gender pay gap.
Beyond CIHT, Steve serves as Chair of the Board of Governors at Leeds College of Building, an institution that provides apprenticeships and training in a broad range of engineering and planning disciplines, including civil engineering and transport planning.
There was unanimous agreement that Steve Carmody is highly deserving of the Certificate of Merit, recognising his exceptional and sustained contribution to CIHT locally and nationally.
