The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) was represented at a House of Commons Transport Committee evidence session today, with Kate Carpenter, CIHT Vice President, appearing before MPs as part of the Committee's inquiry into the UK Government's Road Safety Strategy.
The session focused on the role of infrastructure in improving road safety and explored how the UK Government's new Road Safety Strategy can be translated into practical action. Witnesses were questioned on the strategy's ambitions to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on the roads, the implementation of the Safe System approach, and the level of investment needed to deliver meaningful improvements. The Committee also examined issues including road design, rural road safety, speed management, maintenance, and the safety of vulnerable road users.
Appearing alongside representatives from the road safety, walking and cycling sectors, Kate Carpenter provided evidence on behalf of CIHT, drawing on the Institution's expertise across the planning, design, construction, management and operation of transport infrastructure.
Ahead of the session, CIHT submitted written evidence to the inquiry, setting out its views on the Road Safety Strategy and highlighting the importance of evidence-led interventions, improved casualty data, sustained investment and a long-term commitment to the Safe System approach. CIHT's submission also emphasised the need for collaboration across the UK Government, industry and road users to achieve significant reductions in deaths and serious injuries on the UK's roads.
Commenting on the inquiry, Kate Carpenter, Vice President, CIHT said:
"Road safety is a shared responsibility that requires sustained commitment, investment and collaboration across all parts of the transport sector. CIHT welcomes the opportunity to contribute to the Transport Committee's inquiry and to share the expertise of our members in helping to create a safer, more inclusive and sustainable transport network for everyone."
The evidence session forms part of the Transport Committee's wider scrutiny of the UK Government's Road Safety Strategy and its ambition to significantly reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 2035.
CIHT will continue to engage with policymakers and stakeholders to ensure that professional expertise informs the development and delivery of effective road safety policy.
