The Collaborative Learning Circle (CLC) was founded in July 2017 by Dave Wright, Executive Director of Kier Highways and CIHT Inspirational Leader of the Year 2018 and is chaired by Baroness Newlove. Founder members are: Kier Highways Ltd, Aggregate Industries Ltd, Tarmac Trading Ltd, Carnell Support Services Ltd and Chevron TM Ltd. In 2018 the membership was widened to include WJ Group Ltd, Toppesfield Ltd and R&C Williams Ltd.
Social value provision is core to the CLC and current chosen social value partner is OnSide Youth Zones that is bringing 21st Century youth provision to UK areas most in need through poverty and deprivation. Youth Zones work with young people with less opportunity than others. The CLC focuses on the forgotten 25% of ‘Generation Z’ by providing employability, mentoring, apprenticeship and fundraising opportunities. OnSide Youth Zones will be a beneficiary of CIHT’s charity collection at the CIHT Annual Luncheon at Grosvenor House on Thursday 15 December.
Sue Percy, CEO CIHT said:
“I am delighted CIHT is supporting Kier Highways’ Collaborative Learning Circle (CLC) working with OnSide Youth Zones. The CLC is an excellent fit with CIHT’s core values to be collaborative, to promote professionalism and to encourage the sharing of learning and knowledge. Collaboration is vital in our industry in improving project delivery, customer satisfaction, health and safety and innovation. Engagement with OnSide Youth Zones, provides life-changing opportunities for disadvantaged young people and a route for apprentices to come into the industry.”
“CIHT welcomes all initiatives addressing skills shortages and ways to create opportunities for young people from across the industry.”
CLC provides training and development through nine accredited e-learning training modules for employees on all levels that focus on improving safety, customer service and delivery through innovation and collaboration. The aim is to embed collaborative working as an industry norm. CIHT and the Institution for Collaborative Working (ICW) approve and endorse these modules that qualify for Continuous Professional Development (CPD). The modules have been widely tested by user groups generating the award of over 500 certificates for successful completion.
Dave Wright, Executive Director at Kier Highways and CIHT Inspirational Leader of the Year 2018 said: “The Collaborative Learning Circle has a great opportunity, particularly over the next six to 12 months, to challenge the rest of the industry to follow our lead and bring standardisation across safety, customer service and delivery.”
There are plans to widen CLC membership to include additional partners with the overall objective of embedding these values into the wider industry with traditional competitors becoming co-collaborators.
