27th Apr 2018

As the leading voice of the highways and transport infrastructure profession, CIHT is working in conjunction with key stakeholders to produce ‘Better Planning for Better Transport’ advice. The document will identify and provide clear advice for government and local authorities that is accessible to developers, sector practitioners, local communities and residents.

To produce the advice CIHT has established the Better Planning for Better Transport Working Group which met with key stakeholders on Wednesday 18 April to address positive sustainable transport solutions along with a wider focus on creating healthy communities. CIHT is leading this cross-profession initiative in parallel with responding to the consultation on the draft revised National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) at the invitation of the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government.

Sue Percy, CIHT, Chief Executive says:

“CIHT is committed to working collaboratively with our members and other leading bodies to frame a meaningful response to the revised NPPF. We aim to generate evidence based accessible advice that can be implemented effectively across different planning scenarios.

“We recognise that ‘one size does not fit all’ and that the mechanisms for decision making and managing transport and infrastructure are diverse. We also recognise the need to provide a framework where all engaged in the planning process are confident in working together collaboratively.”

The Better Planning for Better Transport working group sits under Lynda Addison, Chair of the CIHT Sustainable Transport Panel and Chair of the Transport Planning Society (TPS). The group includes highly experienced CIHT members and professionals who design, build, manage and operate transport and infrastructure nationally and regionally from across the private and public sectors.
