CIHT held a workshop event on Monday 27 October to discuss Planning for Buses.

The workshop, chaired by Lynda Addison (Chair of the CIHT Sustainable Transport Panel), and was informed by statements, from Stephen Joseph (CBT), David Bull (Thurrock Council), Dr Scott Copsey (University of Hertfordshire) and Martin Dean (GoAhead), designed to stimulate the debate.  Others around the table included representatives from Local and Central Government, consultants and operators.

The group discussed the challenges faced operators, developers, public transport planners and government.  Those challenges included attitudes, culture, long-term certainty in policies and funding, partnership, design, subsidies and regulation.

The workshop then focussed on the main themes and possible solutions discussing the vision, promotion and attitude towards public transport; the design, implementation and delivery; the relationship between the public and private sector; and funding cost and subsidy issues.

CIHT will produce a summary of the workshop in order to develop the debate in the sector, including the production of future guidelines and events to promote increase bus use and better planning.
