The IHT is pleased to announce the commencement of a project to produce guidelines to assist Local Authority Planning and Highway officials, as well as other professionals, to bridge the gap between ‘Manual for Streets’ and the ‘Design Manual for Roads and Bridges’ when designing new or upgrading existing highways.

The new document which will be titled 'Manual for Streets – Wider Application of the Principles' will take the philosophies set out in ‘Manual for Streets’ and demonstrate, through guidance and case studies, how they can be extended beyond residential streets to encompass both urban and rural situations.

The work has been awarded to WSP Development and Transportation. Alan Young will head up a formidable team of experts drawn from both highway and urban design specialisms. The project is expected to take 15 months with publication of the document in the autumn of 2010. The development of the document has been endorsed by DfT, CABE and CSS.
