Nick Hopcraft, chair of the CIHT Procurement and Delivery Panel, started of the day by introducing the topic of collaborative procurement and the integrator role and its history in the highways and transportation sector as well as what seems to be a return of this role with developments such as Project 13, Highways England's routes to market strategy and others.
The full-day workshop consisted of three presentations. Initially, Ed Moore, Chief Executive at ResoLex, kicked off the workshop by presenting a consultants perspective on what it the integrator role is and what is needed to engage successfully in these collaborative procurement practices. Ed talked about how the industry is focused on the commercial and technical aspects of project delivery, but not very apt at the social aspect, which is crucial to engage in project delivery.
Mark Borland, Head of Procurement Delivery at Highways England, then went on to present HE's approach to collaborative procurement. 4 distinct models for procuring collaboratively have been identified by Highways England, and the purpose of these is to secure innovation, efficiencies and control.
Finally, Tom Flatau, Chief Executive of Teamworking International, gave an interactive session on the neuroscience of negotiating and how you can engage in negotiations and ensure positive outcomes for both parties.
