140618_Aberdeen_224Connect Roads has been selected as preferred bidder to deliver the £745M Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route project.

The Connect Roads consortium – comprising Balfour Beatty, Galliford Try and Carillion – is expected to begin construction of the new 58km road by the end of this year.

Transport Minister Keith Brown said works should be completed by Spring 2018, when the road is expected to carry more than 43,000 vehicles each day through its busiest sections.

“This is great news for the people of Aberdeen and North East Scotland and underlines our commitment to reversing years of under investment which has led to the kinds of pressures we see on the road network in and around Aberdeen every day,” he said.

For the most part the road will be a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction. Construction of the route will include 12 junctions, two river crossings, a crossing of the Aberdeen to Inverness railway and three wildlife bridges. CH2M Hill, as part of a joint venture with Atkins, will provide design work and construction supervision.

As well as providing a boost to the local economy, Aberdeenshire Council leader Jim Gifford said the road will have an important function in improving road safety. "It will remove traffic from many of our rural roads in Aberdeenshire while also linking key locations with an improved standard of road network,” he said.

The scheme consists of four sections: Balmedie to Tipperty, North Kingswells to Blackdog, Charleston to North Kingswells and Stonehaven to Cleanhill.

Also this week Transport Scotland has awarded Amey a £90M six year contract to maintain and improve motorways and trunk roads in South East Scotland. This will see Amey deliver engineering design and operational delivery services for more than 880km of road.
