Congestion relief and economic benefit have been promised near Corby following the opening of a new link road last Friday by the Transport Minister Robert Goodwill.
The 6km dual carriageway connects the A43 with the A6003 to the south of the Northamptonshire town. The scheme is also designed to improve access to the nearby A14 and improve safety on local roads through villages including Geddington.
Northamptonshire County Council leader Jim Harker welcomed the road’s opening. He said: “We are committed to laying the foundations to facilitate economic growth and I see this scheme as essential to unlocking development in Corby and the surrounding area.”
Councillor Harker added that many local people have pushed for such a scheme for the past 30 years to relieve through traffic from small villages.
Work to build the link road was carried out by Interserve Construction and MGWSP (May Gurney and WSP). Government contributed £20.5M towards the £34M scheme, with Northamptonshire County Council funding the balance.
The scheme’s project engineer Tony Ball said: “The A43 Corby Link Road will link employment areas on the east of the town, provide a smoother link to the A14 and generate continued growth in the area.”
Among the first vehicles to use the new link road was a procession of heavy goods vehicles from county firms, emergency vehicles, super cars and specialist eco cars.
