Preferred route of a 14km improvement to the A30 in Cornwall is set to be revealed next spring following a public consultation which gets under way this weekend.

The scheme will involve dualling a section of the A30 between Chiverton and Carland Cross – located to the north of Truro and south of Newquay.

This £280M project forms part of a wider £2Bn commitment by the Department for Transport and Highways England to turn the A303/A30/A358 corridor into an ‘expressway’ to the South West.

This includes a major scheme to create a twin bored tunnel at Stonehenge (see Transportation Professional’s October issue – out next week – for an in depth feature on the expressway).

Highways England’s regional director for the South West Andrew Page-Dove said: “Improving this stretch of the A30 is vital to improving motorists’ journeys, cutting congestion and helping unlock economic growth.”

The strategic road network operator is working alongside Cornwall Council to deliver the Chiverton to Carland Cross scheme.

“We welcome this scheme as it will help to improve journey times for both residents, businesses and visitors,” said the head of Cornwall Council’s strategy, economy, enterprise and environment directorate Nigel Blackler.

“We know from asking the public during an engagement exercise in March last year that there is already strong support to improve this stretch of the A30.”

He added: “We hope that people will take part in this next stage where they can view, discuss and help influence the proposals so that a preferred route can be progressed.”

Construction of the project could begin in early 2020. The public consultation runs from 15 October to 25 November.
