Would you like to contribute to the well being of our industry and help to shape the path for the future? Becoming a member of the IHT Council gives you an opportunity to do just that. You will find the experience both enjoyable and rewarding, as Council Membership offers you the chance to give something back to the industry and to network with fellow professionals. As a Council Member you will have unparalleled opportunities to meet informally with others in the profession, be they contractors, consultants, or public authority people. You will also have the opportunity to determine the strategic and professional direction of your Institution and play a key role in influencing IHT Policy.
This year, there are four vacancies for Ordinary Members (any Corporate Member can stand) and three Vacancies for Branch Members (Northern Branch, North Eastern Branch and Southern Branch). To stand as a Branch Member you must be a Corporate Member of the respective Branch.
What does being a Council Member involve?
All Council Members serve both on the Council and on one of six IHT Boards, Membership, Member Services, Education, Network and Infrastructure Management, Procurement & Delivery or Transport Policy. Council Members assume responsibility for a part of their Board’s activities. Council and Board meetings are held five times a year, usually on the same day to keep time commitments to a minimum.
How do I put my name forward?
Branch Committees usually coordinate the nomination of Branch Members and if you are thinking of standing as a Branch Representative you should contact your Branch Secretary.
To put your name forward for the ballot for an Ordinary Member of the Council you can download the
Council Nomination Form 2009. You will need to be proposed by eight fully paid up Members or Fellows of the Institution (not Students or Associate Members) whose signatures are needed on your nomination form. You will also need to send in a photograph, which we reproduce along with a short career summary in Transportation Professional. When completing your career summary it is useful to bring out your previous service for IHT and your particular interest in standing.
Send the whole nomination form (2 pages) plus your photo, to Brian Murrell at IHT, 119 Britannia Walk London N1 7JE. If you prefer, you can send in your career summary and photo by email to brian.murrell@iht.org but because of the requirement for signatures on the first page of the nomination form, this page must be sent in by post.
What happens next?
The closing date for nominations is 20th February 2009. If there is more than one Branch Member nomination from each branch, a ballot of members in the respective branch will be held. If there are more nominations for Ordinary Members than vacancies, a ballot of the membership will take place. Ballot material will be sent out with the April issue of Transportation Professional. Votes will be counted by the single transferable vote system and the results will be announced at the AGM on Wednesday 24 June 2009.
If you are elected, then you will serve for three years from June 2009.
