This Friday represents the last chance to express your views on whether London needs a new north/south railway, known as Crossrail 2. An online consultation asks people if they support or oppose the principle of the project and whether they would prefer to see a ‘metro’ or a ‘regional’ style service. Crossrail 2 seeks to relieve congestion on main line railways into London and on the Underground network. It is also proposed to support the development of housing and employment opportunities in the capital. It makes use of a corridor formerly known as the Chelsea-Hackney line that has been kept free from intrusive building development since 1991.
The ‘metro’ option is for a 13 station network joining Alexandra Palace in the north with Wimbledon in the south via ‘Euston St Pancras’, Victoria and Clapham Junction. The ‘regional’ option extends this network with a branch north to Cheshunt in Hertfordshire via Tottenham, and south towards Twickenham, Surbiton and Epsom.
“Crossrail 2 is vital to support London’s forecasted population growth to 10M by the early 2030s,” said Transport for London’s managing director of planning Michele Dix. “We have had a good response to the consultation already but we want to encourage anyone who has not yet shared their views to do so by 2 August.”
A report on the findings of the consultation will be presented to the Mayor of London this autumn and is to be made publicly available.
