Transport for London (TfL) and Network Rail have launched a second consultation on Crossrail 2 this week following a review of comments and proposed changes to the route in last year’s public consultation.
The new consultation asks the public to give views on alternative route alignments in the London borough of Hackney, extending the terminal destination for Crossrail 2 from Alexandra Palace to New Southgate, and alternative locations for a proposed station in Chelsea.
The consultation was launched as a milestone was reached in the construction of the new £500M Crossrail 1 station at Canary Wharf where Canary Wharf Contractors placed the last of 56 elliptical aluminium louvres on the station roof. This marks the completion of the external structure of one of Crossrail’s largest stations.
The Crossrail 2 project would create a high frequency, high capacity rail line with shorter journey times between south west and north east London. It would also provide a Regional route into Surrey and Hertfordshire.
TfL and Network Rail said that Crossrail 2 is required to provide the additional capacity needed for London's forecast population growth of 10 million by 2030.
TfL managing director of planning Michèle Dix, said: “Crossrail 2 is a vital addition to London’s transport system and as we move forward with this second consultation we’re another step closer to making it a reality.”
The consultation will run for six weeks, from 9 June to 25 July, following which an application for Powers to Build could take place in 2018.
