CIHT welcomes the publication of the Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy.

The Department for Transport published (21 April 2017) its Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy (CWIS). The Department said “It is our ambition that cycling and walking are the natural choices for shorter journeys, or as part of a longer journey”.  The strategy states that government is investing circa £1.2 billion to the strategy over 5 years.  Click here to read the strategy.

CIHT provided a response to the CWIS consultation of May 2016.  In our response CIHT called for quantifiable targets, actions and deliverables. CIHT also explained that asking Local Authorities to deliver the strategy but not providing guaranteed ring-fenced funding seemed unrealistic. Whilst there has been some quantification of targets, the strategy still falls short and does not provide ring-fencing for a large proportion of the £1.2 billion.
