CIHT welcomes the government's response to the Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy safety review and its two year plan to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists. The document sets out detailed proposals and a targeted programme of research over the next two years that will ensure our road network delivers for all highway users.

Important commitments include updating 'Local Transport Note 2/08: Cycle Infrastructure Design'; reviewing Planning Policy Guidance to strengthen consideration of safety for cyclists and pedestrians (both of which CIHT's Sustainable Transport Panel is contributing to), and promoting the use of UKRLG Code of Practise.

Peter Dickinson, Chair of CIHT's Urban Design Panel says "This is an important step in delivering villages, towns and cities that work for everyone and we must ensure that all people, including those with reduced mobility or visual impairments, can navigate safely though these environments."

A number of policies encouraged by CIHT's members seem to be taken forward, including a focus on local authorities, addressing issues with the Highway Code, and enabling automated enforcement of parking restrictions. It is also intended to create a new 'Cycling and Walking Tsar' which will resemble the roles of Will Norman in London and Chris Boardman in Manchester at the national level.

CIHT will also be holding a event entitled 'More Data, More Safety?' on 5th December which will explain the decision making processes in road safety, see more at this link
