Five thousand cyclists took part in a mass bike ride in London on Saturday, sending a message to local politicians about the need for improved cycle safety measures in the capital.
Campaigners taking part in the ‘Space for Cycling Big Ride’ were asking for councils to redesign roads to make cycling safer for riders of all ages and abilities.
They called for protected lanes on mains roads, 20MPH speed limits and removing through motor traffic from residential streets.
London Cycling Campaign chief executive Ashok Sinha said: “Our city and borough leaders can be in no doubt as to the hunger there is from ordinary Londoners for streets that are safe and inviting for everyone to cycle.
“So far, over 2500 local election candidates have backed our 629 ward specific Space for Cycling measures to improve local streets for cycling, so now it’s time to see the action and funding that match the desires of Londoners,” he added.
The ride started on Park Lane and passed through Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square before finishing on Victoria Embankment. It was followed by a rally with guest speakers including representatives from the major UK political parties.
Saturday also saw similar, smaller rides in Sheffield, Leeds, Newcastle, Manchester, Solihull and Bristol. More than 160 local councillors outside London have pledged to back the campaign’s demands.
