The UK Roads Liaison Group study is managed by the DfT under the direction of a Steering Group.  The aim of the project is to identify a comprehensive set of good practice documents, that provide guidance to local authorities where gaps have been identified between the Manual for Streets and the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges.

A series of 5 workshops were held in May and June.  The output from the workshops has been reviewed and summarised in a list of 51 potential gaps in guidance identified by the workshop attendees.  Now the project aims to identify the priority gaps so that we can determine the scope for the remainder of the project that will provide the most benefit to all UK local authorities.  To do this, the project team would be grateful if you could assist by completing the online survey found here

The aim of the survey is to identify the genuine gaps in guidance.  To do this the team wish to gather the shared intelligence of the wider local authority community to determine:

  • Which gaps are genuine, and to seek any other documents you have that support filling these gaps; and
  • Which gaps are not genuine, because the gap is addressed via either existing national guidance or work currently being undertaken.

Please note the following points in relation to the survey:

  • The survey will run throughout August with a closing date of Tuesday 31st August.
  • There is no limit to the number of responses per authority, feel free to forward the email to other interested colleagues.
  • You do not have to answer every question and you will be given the opportunity to skip between the three main categories (highways, structures and lighting) if you only wish to answer questions related to your specialism.  It is expected that the time required for each of the highways, structures and lighting categories will be approximately 30, 15 and 15 minutes respectively depending upon your level of input to the survey.
  • You can exit and re-enter the survey as many times as you like before the closing date of the survey.  Your data will be automatically saved so just close the browser or click 'exit this survey' to do this.  You don’t have to fully complete the survey – partial responses will still be saved and included within the overall analysis.
