Designers are starting work on plans for the £160M upgrade to one of the busiest sections of road in East Yorkshire – the A63 Castle Street in Hull city centre.
The Mott MacDonald Grontmij Joint Venture (MMGJV) has been appointed by the Highways Agency to develop proposals for the scheme which is intended to reduce journey times to the Port of Hull, ease congestion and improve safety.
Hull’s A63 scheme is one of six projects identified for future delivery but which has been selected to have its development work funded in the current spending review period for potential construction in the early part of the next spending review period.
The 1.5km section of dual carriageway provides an important east-west link between the M62, Humber Bridge and Port of Hull but it also acts as a barrier between the city centre to the north and development areas, tourist and recreational facilities to the south.
Proposed scheme improvements consider lowering the level of the road into a cutting, widening the existing eastbound carriageway and provision of footbridges.
MMG JV will develop cost, primary design, construction and related environmental proposals to support the planning process that will act as the foundation towards facilitating the scheme’s construction. The package of work has been awarded as part of the HA’s project support framework – lot 1 for integrated highway engineering and technology design consultancy. MMG JV was appointed to the framework in April 2011.
Chancellor George Osborne will be unveiling plans for the next spending review period from 2015 onwards on 26 June.
