Draft casualty data for the first quarter of 2012 shows continuing increases in fatal and serious injuries for cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists, against a continuing improvement for car users. CIHT calls on government to show leadership in all of the areas where these trends can be reduced: setting and enforcing speed limits; design for safety, especially for vulnerable users; safety schemes at high risk locations and education and training of all road users. Such measures would have environmental and public health benefits as well as reducing the cost and damage resulting from road traffic injury.
This publication presents statistics on personal injury accidents in the year ending March 2012 on public roads (including footways) in Great Britain, which became known to the police within 30 days. The publication can be found here.
